(Apologies in advance to any international readers, this post is for the Aussies)
I don't usually like to go too far off topic with my postings, but this one is an important one and I'm hoping that by posting this it will teach someone about this issue, and hopefully prompt someone to act.
There are proposed cuts of $400million government funding of medical research - which, given that current funding is around $700million, is a huge cut. Cutting medical research funding may seem like a short term solution to help balance the budget, but it's long term ramifications would cost a lot more than it would save.
As a member of the medical research community I can vouch first hand for the passion of Australia's medical researchers and the outstanding quality of the research they are conducting. If the proposed cuts go through these researchers will either have to move overseas, or even worse, stop their research altogether.
