Hollyburn Sew-Along - Choosing a View

Sewaholic Hollyburn Skirt Sew-Along

Welcome to the next post in the Hollyburn Sew-Along!

Incase you've missed them, here are the posts so far:

Inspiration (Part 1)
Inspiration (Part 2)

Today we're going to talk about the different views available with the Sewaholic Hollyburn skirt pattern.

The pattern has three views:
  • View A is the longest version, about 24-26". It is the least flared.
  • View B is about 21-23" (middle length), and similarly has a middle amount of flare.
  • View C is the shortest version, about 17-19". It has the most flare.

You can disregard which view the extras are on (belt loops and button tabs) as they are completely interchangeable between views.

The key to deciding which view to make is how long you want your skirt to be. The finished lengths are listed on the envelope back:

What I suggest doing is measuring on yourself how long the different versions are to help you decide how long you want your version. What I like to do is to use a belt or piece of string or elastic to 'mark' where the waistband will hit - in this case at your waist. Then holding a tape measure level with the belt at the length you want it, see where the bottom of the tape measure hits. You can then use a mirror (or camera or friend ) to see where that hits on your legs. Remember though:  if you bend over, where the tape measure hits will change so stay standing up straight!

As you can see in the photos, in my size on me view A (left) would hit at mid-high calf level, view B (middle) would hit at knee level, and view C (right) would hit at mid-low thigh level.

Alternatively (or additionally) you could measure the length of other skirts are that you own - but remember, this skirt is designed to sit at your waist, so if those skirts sit somewhere else the length will be affected accordingly.

However, you're not completely tied to making just the three lengths specified under your size - you can very easily make any of the lengths listed under all the different sizes, something I'll be talking about in a future post. So have a play with your tape measure until you find the length you want - anything between 17.5"-19.5", 21.5-23.5", and 24.5-26.5" is super easy to do, the other measurements are possible but a tiny bit trickier.

Once you've decided on a length, you can choose your view - choosing the view is as easy as finding which view has the finished length measurement you've just decided on!

Are you having trouble which view to make? Here are some examples of the Hollyburn skirt made up. This one is view A:

These are all view B:

And these ones are view C:

So, which view are you going to make? Any questions?

Missed any of the sew-along posts, or just want to re-read them? You can find the full list here.

  1. I'm going to go with View A and might add a little extra length to it as I like my skirts generally a little big longer :)

    1. just coz it's summer doesn't mean you have to go short ;) I like to have slightly longer skirts in summer (for modesty, particularly while bike riding), but have some shorter ones for when it's cool enough to be wearing opaque tights

  4. I'm definitely doing length B with view B. Not too short, not too long ~ just right for me!

  5. Hmmmm... It's a toss up for me between B and C. I'm going to have to try this tape measure trick in front of the mirror.

Will you include a lining in your sewalong? That would be great and even more helpful for us newbies :)

  9. All these decisions ... hmmm, I hope I am not going to ruin the skirt terribly by doing view A but the length of view B. I am always a bit conservative with my flare.
